How does an "Ionic Breeze" air purifier compare to an air purification device with a HEPA filter? Does an "Ionic Breeze Quadra" actually purify and move the air around a room as well as a less-marketed, often less-expensive HEPA filter device? Skipper and his little buddy replied: "depends on if you want to buy replacement filters or not. I have a smaller version of the ionic breeze, about a foot high, and tho it doesnt move air like a fan does, it does move enough air to make the dirt stick to its filter rods. its amazing how much it picks up. I live in a dusty state, so I have to clean them once a week or so, but thats all dirt I am not breathing. It does create ozone, tho, which some say is not good for you, so I turn mine off at night when I am in the room. But it keeps the room smelling fresh while it is working. I have also tried several filter type cleaners, also, but I dont like haveing to buy the expensive hepa filters, and while they do filter the air pretty well, it gets to be a pain, because the store may discontinue them after a while, and I have to search for some other place to get them, etc. The ionic breeze never needs a filter, tho, I just wipe it down with a couple of handi wipes once a week, and thats it. I bought mine at a thrift store for 5 bucks, tho... so Thats quite a discount from the Sharper Image price."
Carole Q replied: "Compare filter replacement prices. We got rid of our HEPA filter purifier because the filters were 1) hard to find replacements and 2) costing us much more than we thought it was worth." Is the air from the Sharper Image Ionic breeze air purifier supposed to smell funny? I just bought a used ionic breeze air purifier, but the air coming out of it doesn't smell that great. Is that normal? What's the deal? Thanks! Arbitrage replied: "Yes, I think it's normal. I had one in the office for a while, and even after cleaning it and everything, it smelled a little strange. Maybe that's because our noses are so used to the smell of dirty air.
It's similar to the feeling when you drink distilled water."
britboo12 replied: "It could smell like that because it is used, but there are other reasons too. It could also smell like that because you are not use to fresh air."
hutsong replied: "I wouldn't recommend it.What you smell is ozone.Ozone is an unstable, poisonous allotrope of oxygen, that is formed naturally in the ozone layer from atmospheric oxygen by electric discharge or exposure to ultraviolet radiation, also produced in the lower atmosphere by the photochemical reaction of certain pollutants. It is a highly reactive oxidizing agent used to deodorize air, purify water, and treat industrial wastes." what is difference between ionic breeze air purifier and regular air purifier? Note: Please don't email me the price difference, I want to know the actual difference b/w the two. missgoddessrachel replied: "About $300."
professer_drex replied: "the ionic breeze costs more"
Air Quality Guy replied: "The phenomenon of ionic breeze is when high voltage charges the air around an element. This voltage excites the free electrons of molecules of air surrounding the element causing them to accelerate away from the element. This excitation and subsequent acceleration creates the "ionic breeze" which can be felt. Supposedly then these electrons then seek out dirty air in the room.
A "regular" air cleaner may use a media filter with a blower to suck dirty air through the filter to clean the air. There are also Electrostatic Precipitators that charge the particles as they pass through an ionizer and then collect them as they go to the collector section.
The biggest difference is that most air purifiers have a blower to move the air, this will allow more air in a room to be cleaned.

I'd be happy to hear if they really purify the air being it smoke filled air (cigarettes) or otherwise. What brands can you recommend for good purification of inside air? beer_farts replied: "I have one and it works fine. It gets rid of all the fart smells hence the name"
Deb replied: "I do and the ones that are for large rooms work! I also must say the one for the bathroom does also. The one for the car doesn't though. It's worth the money, better than nothing or the regular air purifiers."
AmunRa replied: "We have two of them plus 3 of the little ones. Yeah they really do work and suck some pretty nasty stuff out of the air.
Just keep up on keeping it clean, we wash the grid down 2x a month, otherwise it starts making a crackling noise. You have to let it sit and dry for a little bit too.
We have a gas furnace and it has had its ducts cleaned once a year and new filters every month and still tons of dust. Got the Ionic breeze and there is hardly any dust left at all.
No impact on my electric bill at all either.
Damn I sound like the commercial now! Yeah they are worth the money."
theonetolookfore replied: "Consumer reports.org lists the ionic breeze as a waste of money. use their site to choose.
Hepa filters do the best bang for the buck.
Happy breathing!"
tmhumes4@sbcglobal.net replied: "I have the Ionic Pro air purifiers. They are a knock off of the Ionic Breeze. Mine are much taller. I don't smoke but it does make the air fresher. It also catches some dust. You still have to dust no matter what you use. The Ionic Pro is made along the same lines as the Ionic Breeze but costs way way less. I suggests that you purchase several. I have 3 in a 1000 sq foot condo."
Ah Choo replied: "Last year a co worker and I did alot of reading in consumers guides and online. I ended up with a fan powered hepa filter. The ionic air cleaners take out somewhat smaller particles, but in sealed room tests they could not outdo the hepa filter style air cleaners at cleaning the whole volume of the room. -- You'll notice they advertise how much stuff you find on the vanes, but not what percentage of contamination they can remove from the air. The Ionic cleaners without fans aren't much use around dogs that shed, my coworker found. The links below are not the original ones I used when researching, but the info is similar."
Airboy Hoss replied: "The Ionic Breeze is one of the greatest frauds perpetrated on mankind.
The most effective purifier without question is the Fresh Air, by Ecoquest. They use a technology first developed by N.A.S.A. called radiant catalytic ionization, and believe me, it is the bomb!
$750 retail, $100 discount for a trade-in of existing purifier, or buy it wholesale by becoming a dealer for $50.00 and save about $200.00 more."
allisonpeck replied: "It actually has been proved to *not* be good for some people, espeically children and seniors. It takes out important factors in the air that your lungs crave. I do not know the specifices, but just keep this in mind. My boyfriend had one that he said worked wonders for a few weeks, then stopped being effective. He has since removed it from his home after reading this article on how it's not great for you."
Sally J replied: "Check Consumer Reports. I read an article last year in their magazine that rated air purifiers and the Ionic Breeze sucked. Don't waste your money on it." Does anyone know if the Sharper Image's Ionic Breeze air purifier really works? I've seen many negative reviews and some positive. Don't know whether to take advantage of the money back guarantee... mcghankathy replied: "It doea work, but only in an average size room. Not like they say on TV, for the entire home. Try it."
ratboy replied: "I've heard nothing but bad things about them. don't have personal experience with the full sized ones, but I bought a car sized ionic breeze from the Sharper Image store on ebay, it worked ok for 2 days then suddenly stopped and wouldn't work again. They wanted the opriginal packaging for the return but I had tossed the box. Their customer service people were big pains in the a$$ and I had to complain several times before I could get a refund.
Their "money back guarantee" means they guarantee to give you a hard time if you try to return their faulty products."
Lizzy replied: "I would not. I own the Sharper Image Ionic Breeze and the thing does not purify air very well. I have only cleand out the inside once in the year I have had it and the inside is still clean after three months. The other thing about the Ionic Breeze is that it is not silent there is a constant humming noise."
bad guppy replied: "i love mine. the air in my bedroom smells much more fresh when i use it, and it picks up lots of dust."
Wharf Rat replied: "The Ionic Breeze tested poorly according to a 2003 study conducted by consumer reports for two reasons. It is too small to be effective and it emits harmful ozone in quantities that could have deleterious effects on one's health.
I use a Fresh Air from EcoQuest. I carefully reviewed many air purifiers and this is what I found.
The Fresh Air technology by EcoQuest was developed to remove airborne pathogens from the air in spacecraft. In fact, EcoQuest was just awarded Certified Space Technology Status.
Ecoquest has had some negative reviews however because of a lawsuit that was filed years ago before they changed their name from Alpine to Ecoquest. That didn't bother me at all being that I am in business myself and I am familiar with today's extremely litigious business climate and how a company must be constantly reinventing itself to keep growing.
I am happy with my Fresh Air. I have noticed a significant reduction in my allergies. In fact, I recently went on vacation and stayed where there were no air purifiers. My allergies came back ten-fold and did not subside until after a few days of being back home and in my home office all day with my Fresh Air on." Help on Quadra Ionic Breeze Air Purifier!!!!? on the mode control, where the arrow is pointing to each level, on the arrow there's a light which should be blue but mine is flashing blue. the blue light comes on and off every like 2 sec. and there is no air coming out of the front. I've tried cleaning it and even pluging it to another outlet. doesn't work....................please help if you know the situation i'm talking about. Thanks so much! whadda-dingo-gal replied: "Review your owner's manual under the troubleshooting. If that doens't work, call the toll free number listed in the manual.
:-)" Leaving on air purifiers all the time, good or bad idea? I just got a sharper image ionic breeze air purifier and was wondering if it was a good or bad idea to leave it on 24/7? Thanks in advance for the help. Bejeweled Addict replied: "By all means turn it off when you are going to be away like for a weekend unless you have a pet in the house (babysat for of course!). I had one of those and liked it, but i only used it during my allergy season. Otherwise i used it only once in awhile."
Tracy M replied: "Well, if you smoke, I say 24/7, unless you go on a trip. It should give some tips for this in the instruction booklet. I have never heard of anyone having trouble when they left it on 24/7. Besides, isn't that what they are designed for, full time cleaning the air?"
skiperdee1979 replied: "I you smoke it is ok to leave them on 24/7. If you dont smoke then turn it off every now and then. Maybe run it for an hour at a time. Leave it off for 2 hours then after that turn it back on for an hour. This way your house or apartment stays fresh smelling and you wont burn out the motor or fan on it as fast." Air purifiers? I know they cost a lot of money, but are the ionic breeze air purifiers better that the ones with filters? louie m replied: "Yeah, go with either Ionic Breeze from Sharper Image or the Oreck Air purifier. Both costs around $350 but it's money well spent. You'll really notice the air quality in your home."
HP G replied: "better to have ionic purifier and filter at the same time.
i got the hunter ionic air purifier with precarbon filter. very nice! got it for $250 at lowes and this is for the big room, not some pathetic looking slim tower that don't work!
"
williamj replied: "I owned an ionic breeze because of asthma and it is by far the best purifier i've ever had."
Ted Z replied: "According to consumer reports the Ionic Breeze is absolutely ineffective.
For a portable air cleaner to be effective the air in the room must move though the cleaning system (simple huh?). The organization that monitors this (AHAM) suggestes that air should move though the cleaner 6 to 8 times AN HOUR for it to be effective. So this requires a pretty healthy sized fan.
Stay with HEPA technology. It is used in Hospitals and is well proven. While it costs more, it works."
Divine replied: "If you are going to spend a pretty penny than I am sure that you are the type of person who appreciates Quality more than anything. When buying a thing such as an Air Purifier it is necessary that you really do your research instead of just going out there and buying the most expensive thing on the shelf. A few months back I was researching different Air Purifiers for my house so that I can be sure I got a Quality product for my money, rather than buying something that can be hazardous to my health. So I figured I would share my detailled research with you.
I was recommended by my doctor that I use a Air Purifier system due to Asthma and in general it is necessary for health purposes, and also for clean air since the air we breathe in has a direct effect on our body. My doctor recommended that I buy a brand that is no in stores but is 100% better than Sharper Image and Ionic Breeze that is on the market right now. So here is a clear comparision of Sharper Image and Ionic Breeze to the AIR PURIFIER I use:
Air Purifier I Use:
Effectively removes up to 99.99% of airborne particles, reduces odors, has a clean air indicator, has Prefilter, and HEPA
The cleaning speed is 5 speeds, top airflow of 250 CFM(Cubic feet per Minute) and Top CADR (Clean air Delivery Rate) of 250, and cleans a 390sq.ft room, also it comes with a remote control, timer and its filters last up to 1 year(odor) and 3 years (HEPA).
Sharper Image and Ionic Breeze:
Reduce upto 43% airborne particles, redcue some odor, no clean air indicator, UV light and ionizer, Cleaning speed is 4 speeds, top airflow of 52 CFM(Cubic feet per minute) and Top CADR(Clean Air Delivery Rate) of 16, cleans a 25sq.ft room, no remote control, no timer, no fileters, blades need cleaning every two weeks.
When I did more research I also discovered that the airborne particles cleaned by Ionic Breeze and Sharper Image yield hazardous wates in air. So in one hand they clean some airborne particles and at the same time they yield hazardous wastes in your house. Also the Airpurifier I use is very quiet and has a 2 year warranty at least. I was also given a personal demo with scientific information and delivery at home when I was considering buying my Air Purifier.
My one recommendation is that you SPEND YOUR MONEY WISELY ON A QULAITY PRODUCAT AND LOOK AT WHAT IS AVAILABLE OUT THERE and from personal exprience I recommend that you do not buy Ionic Breeze or Sharper Image or the things they have on Walmart, Target or any Retailer Shelves, because they will not be able to give you a personalized demo and or necessary information.
So if you want more information you can go ahead and email me at and I can get you in touch the pertinent information. Best Luck in your search, hope this helps you." Why do air purifiers emit ozone? And why is it bad? I just bought an air purifier called Ionic Pro (which is supposed to be just like the Sharper Image and Ionic Breeze air purifiers), and it states in the pamphlet that it emits small amounts of Ozone. It also says that if you have asthma or other respiratory disease to ask your doctor before using it. That concerned me, so I did a little bit of research online and found that ozone is supposedly bad for your lungs. Why? And people always say we are destroying the Ozone layer, so if ozone is bad, then destroying it would be a good thing wouldn't it? Please inform me about ozone. I am now wondering if I should return my new air purifier... Question Mark replied: "i have heard of a substance called aerosols used in air purifiers .. and it is something that causes depletion of the ozone layer. Ozone is the product formed when 3 oxygen atoms pair up together under high pressure and some other factors . and it is this layer that protects people from the harmful UV rays of the sun.. the depletion of the ozone layer is a terrible thing. ozone is toxic for the body causing anything from nausea to death, but it is useful above our bodies - up in the atmosphere.
there are three kinds of uv rays - UV-A, UV-B and UV-C. i studied about this in highschool and i remember that exposure to one of those types of UV rays could cause skin cancer. it has been shown through research. and i believe that UV-A is the ray that causes premature aging in humans . uv rays in general cause the melanine ( the pigment which gives you skin color) to become hyperactive .. and hence make you tan ..
sorry i started explaining alot of things in one answer but since you were interested in knowing about this ......"
Jim B replied: "The ionizing action of the purifier provides the energy needed to convert 3 O2 (breathable oxygen) molecules into 2 O3 (ozone) molecules. Ions usually have either extra electrons or fewer electrons. This change in electrons makes the oxygen favor the O3 arrangement.
But O2 is usually more stable in the absence of an ionizer. Ozone chemically reacts with the lungs, since ozone is so volatile. (see reference)
Air purifiers based on ionizing usually produce small quantities of ozone. For most people, the amount isn't high enough to concern them. But people with any history of lung problems should consult a doctor.
Although ozone is bad in the lungs, the molecule helps block ultra-violet light. So the layer of ozone in the upper atmosphere is important to human survival. But ozone in lower levels is not good, due to respiratory effects.
The ozone layer experienced rapid destruction when chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) from aerosols gradually drifted up to the level of the ozone layer of the atmosphere. If you think about how bleach is a strong cleaner, you realize chlorine is highly reactive. When mixing the chlorine from the CFCs with the highly reactive ozone, the ozone was quickly reduced to oxygen. This was the opposite of what your ionizer is doing. One bit of chlorine converted 1,000 molecules of ozone to normal oxygen." Nothing seems to be getting rid of the fish smell in my house. Any new ideas? I regrettably cooked some orange roughy on an indoor grill 2 weeks ago and the smell took over my house. It's awful! Although it has subsided a little, the smell still lingers and I can't get rid of it. It's embarrassing! I'm hoping some of you have some new ideas for me that will help. know this question has been asked here already and I've attempted many of the suggestions without success. Here's a list of the things I've done in the past 2 weeks:
- Cleaned the entire area with Lysol 4-1 disinfectant multiple times.
- Sprayed Oust & Febreeze throughout the house. This includes both the Febreeze Air and the fabric version on all upholstery and carpets - even the faux wood blinds which also smell!
- Burned scented candles.
- Placed bowls of vinegar in all areas of the house.
- Boiled vinegar, lemons, vanilla, cinnamon (ground and sticks).
- Baked cookies.
- Left windows to house open for several days.
- I've been running an Ionic Breeze air purifier for the full 2 weeks.
- Put carpet freshener on all carpeted floors and vacuumed it up.
- Washed all my clothes.
Any new ideas? Short of an exorcism, I don't know what else to do!
Thanks in advance! MD/teacher replied: "Baking soda sprinkled on your carpet let it sit and then vacuum throw away the bag after you are done. You should keep on frebreezing, Febreeze can only take away so much and you have to keep re-doing it. I would febreeze every four or five hours for a few days. Drapes, furniture and clothes in closets. Wash all of your towels, and ovenmitts, and anything made of material in your kitchen. Good Luck"
FoxForceFiveVega replied: "Wow. I was gonna suggest the vinegar thing..but seems you've done everything. Next step would be to steam clean the carpets and wash all upholstery. Maybe the smell is lingering there...carpet, curtains, furniture..I suggest never cooking fish again."
Anna E replied: "Wash your curtains if you haven't already. You might also try washing down your walls. A co worker of mine heated some orange roughy in the microwave a few weeks ago, and the whole office smelled for a week."
lennie replied: "I always use vinegar But not like this, give it a try
I hope this helps"
wgriner98 replied: "Maybe you just need to take a shower yourself. That could be where the smell is coming from." |
